SCHOOL LIBRARIES: A VERITABLE TOOL FOR HIV/AIDS INFORMATION DISSEMINATION AND AWARENESS
Abstract
This paper discussed the vital role the school library plays in disseminating correct information on HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS is a global life threatening epidemic which has defied efforts at producing a vaccine and a cure. It continues to sweep across the globe, leaving a terrible trail of human destruction. Prevention through right information remains the most effective way of curbing the spread as the disease is here with us. Young adults are seen as one of the groups especially vulnerable to this disease as they account for a higher percentage of new infections recorded every year. This is because of their involvement
in risky sexual behaviours as well as the myths and misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS. The main thrust of the paper was that information given at the right time is very essential as it helps one to make informed decisions. The school library was therefore portrayed as being in a better position to pass this
HIV/AIDS information to these ones as early as possible. The HIV/AIDS education should be aimed at keeping the school age population informed about the dangers and how to protect themselves and other people.
