PROVISION OF PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICES IN A DEPRESSED ECONOMY

A CASE STUDY OF ANAMBRA STATE LIBRARY BOARD

  • Chris Onebunne Director, Anambra State Library Board and Chairman, NLA Anambra State Chapter

Abstract

The approach to this study is by way of data collection from historical and official records, principles of specialization in professional practice, and interviews as well as scanty literature. While librarianship is universal in nature and therefore perceived from generalities in classification, it has diversity in practice. This diversity allows room for focused interest area in professional practice and partly derives from the nature of the clientele being served. Hence the Nigerian Library Association as a professional body has organizational structure providing for sections - public, academic, special, national, school, cat & class, etc. Library schools in principle are expected to expose prospective practitioners/students to these sections to prepare their minds and expose them to the challenges ahead.
